European elections: autonomists will appeal to the Constitutional Court.

“We will start a process immediately after the vote which we hope will allow the Constitutional Court to express itself, ensuring the Region a full right of representation in the European Parliament” write in a note Union Valdôtaine and Alliance Valdôtaine-VdAUnie who addressed the constitutionalist Giovanni Guzzetta. For the three movements, the lack of a single-member constituency that would allow them to elect a representative in Strasbourg is detrimental to the rights of Aosta Valley residents.

The note continues: «We have decided to reiterate – and we announce it not by chance at the end of the European elections campaign – the unconstitutionality of the current legislation on European Parliament elections. Professor Guzzetta retraced, in the detailed premises, the stages of the electoral system both in the European and in the Italian context. In particular, the topic of representation in the European Parliament of the Aosta Valley was explored in depth.”

Rights violated

«In the law in force and since the first text of 1979 – they underline – there is evidence of a situation of infringement of the rights of Aosta Valley people through mechanisms that do not protect us at all and create a vulnerability for our community that must be remedied. For this reason, the council groups will point out to the political movements, also in view of the now imminent reunification, the need in the judiciary to reiterate the injustice of which Valle d’Aosta is the victim, in the absence of mechanisms that realistically allow the election of an MEP from Valle d’Aosta. This has been proposed several times in Parliament by Aosta Valley parliamentarians and the Valle Council without any success in 45 years, due to the responsibility of the national parties that have succeeded to the government”.
