Elections in Pavia, different visions of the city in comparison organized by the Province of Pavia

Divided on the urban development of Pavia, opposed on the recipes to make citizens feel safer (less on those to make the city more well-kept), all agree on the need to get our hands on mobility in Pavia, in a city in which they also park on doormats, even though they are aware that this will make them unpopular. It is the summary of the confrontation between the five mayoral candidates organized by the Province of Pavia on Tuesday afternoon at the Horti in front of many many readers (and also aspiring councillors). A magnificent setting, that of the Horti del Collegio Borromeo, which the director Andrea Filippi thanked for its hospitality. A symbolic place, a place of beauty, nature and art, a source of inspiration for those who are running to govern the city.

On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June we will vote for both the European and municipal elections: on Saturday the polling stations are open from 3pm to 11pm, on Sunday from 7am to 11pm (if someone can’t find their voter card they can request it throughout the opening hours of the polling stations at the electoral office of the Municipality, in Piazza Municipio, 2).

Five candidates will compete for the position of mayor, all five have answered the questions selected by the editorial staff of the Pavia Province: Francesco Grisolia, candidate of the Communist Workers’ Party; Michele Lissia (supported by the Green and Left Alliance, Italia Viva, Citizens for Pavia, Pavia in Color, Action, Let’s Center, 5 Star Movement and Democratic Party lists); Alessandro Cantoni (supported by the Prima Pavia, Ideal Pavia, Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia and Lega lists), Paolo Walter Cattaneo of the Communist Rifondazione Francesco Signorelli of Potere al Popolo.

RULES

For the comparison we established some rules: five questions, the same for each candidate, 2 and a half minutes each to answer each question (3 for the last one), the response order changed for each question: the first follows the order of the ballot paper, on the next one the first to respond would become the last. We had decided to give each candidate the opportunity to reply, only once, in one minute, at the end of a speech with which they did not agree, with the possibility for the “disputed” to reply.

REQUESTS

Here are our questions, a summary of the answers of each candidate will be in the Province of Pavia on newsstands on Wednesday 5 June. But only those who were there were able to see the nuances, the expressions, the looks, the way of speaking and defending – or proposing – a vision of the city. The way there didn’t seem to be enough time for some questions, the two and a half minutes that rang with no possibility of extension – despite some attempts to go further.

  • Mobility – After years of non-decisions by successive councils, Pavia is neither suitable for cyclists, pedestrians or drivers. Few parking spaces, you risk your life on a bike, there are no sidewalks or they are poorly maintained: what is your priority?
  • Children, schools, families – What do you plan to achieve in your program regarding the children of Pavia? We are talking about nursery schools, nursery schools, school buildings as far as the municipality is responsible, parks
  • Urban future of the city – I grAnd are urban recovery projects an opportunity for development and growth or speculation and risk of overbuilding? What do you think about it? What can the Municipality do about this?
  • Security, decorum, petty crime – In the perception of many citizens, Pavia is an unsafe city, from the point of view of petty crime, and not well taken care of. What do you plan to do about this?
  • What is the measure that you will carry forward that will have made a difference for Pavia in 5 years? And what is the inevitable thing, or what you know you have to do, but which will make you unpopular in some way?
