Arpa confirms that the month of May was very rainy and cool, “due to a large area of low pressure between the British Isles and France which brought humid and unstable winds to northern Italy”.

The rainfall recorded is therefore higher than the average for Maysays ARPA, underlining that “the most important anomaly concerns the western plain, between Milan and Pavia, where more than three times the typical rainfall of the period fell (…) Almost everywhere, the day with the greatest accumulation was that of 15 May, when in the city of Milan 97 mm fell and peaks of over 150-170 mm were recorded in the province and in the Lodi area”.
And if it extends analysis since the 1950s “it emerges that the month just ended is, for many locations, in the ranking of the wettest months of May: for example, in Pavia it is the wettest month of May, while in Mantua and Milan it is the third”. Since the beginning of 2024, 883 mm have been recorded in Milan: “A value that is unprecedented in the last 261 years of history”, says Arpa (the surveys at the Brera Observatory began in 1764).
