TURIN – A new storm it hit Turin around 2.30 pm. This time the most affected areas were those north of the city with violent rain and hail which have reached the centre.
Flooding in various areas, from Leinì to Settimo to the Corso Potenza area in the city, a violent hailstorm hit Parella. Too soon to assess the damage.
Damage to crops
Significant damage was reported in Canavese where it occurred again flooding of the fields and where the hail destroyed the corn seedlings that were just starting to grow.
But what is worrying is the sowing. In Canavese it is not possible to complete the corn sowing cycle. There are lands where it is impossible to enter with agricultural vehicles and equipment. Now it is feared that there is no more time.
«It has been raining incessantly for a month and a half now – observes the president of Coldiretti Torino, Bruno Mecca Cici – The ground is very soaked and it will take at least a week of sunshine to make the fields accessible to agricultural vehicles. We are very late with sowing and this worries us. The agricultural season is not unlimited. There is a time for each stage of plant growth. Sowing should have been completed in mid-May. If you don’t sow within these days the plants will not be able to complete the cycle which is based on the temperatures of the summer days but above all on the hours of light. Even with a warm autumn the corn plant does not grow and the cobs do not ripen.”
Alarm also for hay cuttings. Farmers are afraid of seeing a repeat of the situation of summer 2022 when there was no hay due to drought: this time there is excellent hay but it is finishing its maturation cycle and cannot be mowed and dried. «This cut of hay is the best of the year, if we lose this we will have to buy hay on the market, increasing the costs of feeding the animals».
