Taranto, the building is at risk of collapse: eviction at Palazzo Carducci

TARANTO – Palazzo Carducci, there is a risk of collapse and Rinaldo Melucci orders its eviction. The mayor of Taranto, in fact, signs an ordinance asking to remove two families who, for several years, have occupied the ground and mezzanine floors of the historic building.

In particular, at the end of two inspections which took place last April 22nd and May 27th and which were carried out by the municipal officials of the “Static Disturbances” office and by the Fire Brigade, the degradation and above all the danger was ascertained . Which could also cause the collapse of the building located between Vico Seminario and Via Duomo. Moreover, the building has already been affected by a partial collapse (on the first floor), probably caused by the infiltration of rainwater, but not only. During the inspections, the technicians identified other elements (cracks along the vertical walls) which, certainly, do not give any guarantee for the maintenance of minimum safety conditions for those who live there, for the residents of the area and passers-by.

For the record, reading the union ordinance, we learn that a couple lives on the ground floor who could in fact have lived in Palazzo Carducci, but only as long as the owners of the apartment for whom they cleaned and cleaned remained alive. domestic activities. On the mezzanine floor, however, the family unit that has been living there for several years has, according to the provision of the mayor of Taranto, no right to do so. The eviction order will have to be carried out by the local police, but Melucci also turns to other law enforcement agencies and the Prefecture.

In reality, in addition to ensuring public safety, the Municipality also wants to vacate Palazzo Carducci for another reason, i.e. to redevelop it and finally start the works. And this happens more than two years after the award of the tender, financed by the Institutional Development Contract (Cis Taranto). Which, once the interventions are completed, will transform it into a sort of eighteenth-century house-museum.

In particular, with an investment of approximately 4.5 million euros, the historic building will be recovered and valorised according to the project which envisages the refunctionalisation of the building, with a conservative restoration of its historical and cultural characteristics and the promotion of a set of new functions, diversified on the various floors, which can give it new life in a tourist sense.

Located between the Mudi (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art) and the Basilica of San Cataldo, along Via Duomo, therefore, Palazzo Carducci will be completely restored on the outside and in the internal rooms, safeguarding the decorations. Furthermore, a bookshop will be built inside, as well as commercial spaces in Vico Seminario. Furthermore, the Art Nouveau style courtyard will be the nerve center of public activities, while rooms for video projections and temporary installations, exhibition spaces, museum areas, catering services and a roof garden have been provided on the various floors. Finally, the technicians will also do everything possible to recover the historic furnishings, now preserved in the municipal warehouses.
