A city not suitable for the blind. Or at least, part of Salerno. Despite the daily difficulties experienced by the many blind users in the city of Arechi, the regional councilor of the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired makes an appeal to the institutionsAntonio De Angelis.

Obstacles, risks, dangers: all concentrated in a limited area which for the perception of a blind person is like having a sea at your feet, where you don’t know how far to go to avoid sinking. TO wanting to “swim” in total safety it is precisely the councilor of the association, who – despite his disability – knows the city by heart and all the barriers it has, especially in the area of the judicial citadel, where the routes should be – on the contrary – easier and within everyone’s reach .

Thus De Angelis himself makes an appeal to the institutions and to those responsible: «I wanted to bring to attention a strong critical issue of danger in viale Unità d’Italia. Given that the sidewalk is wide on both sides and lacks perceptive obstacles that allow safe use (with the exception of the edge of the flowerbeds that delimit the lawn under the perimeter wall of the same) – he underlined – there is also the non-existence of tactile-plantar paths who drive along the route to the entrance of the judicial citadel, to that of viale Unità d’Italia and via Dalmatia».

A path that De Angelis was personally able to verify, together with his “trusted friend”, a white cane: «There is no tactile-plantar signalinghe drives at the only traffic light system on call with audible warning placed at Citadel. But there are many critical issues: the sidewalk leading to the bridge that crosses the Irno river is characterized by iron beams which probably have a structural and decorative function but since the sidewalk does not have tactile paths it is dangerous for the blind. On the right, however, along the parapet there are plants that invade the path and create the risk of injury as they are brambles and if you move towards the center as the beams of the truss of the bridge are inclined you cannot perceive them with the stick and you risk hitting hit the tubulars violently with his head, seriously injuring himself. There are no boundaries that allow blind people to travel straight and safely.” Finally the proposal: «Create tactile-plantar paths in the central corridor or in the external perimeter by cleaning the vegetation».
