It was May 2008. The DDA managed to deal an important blow to the mafia organization led by Antonio Iovine, who was still at large at the time. That investigative activity also involved his wife Enrichetta Avallone and several other relatives and alleged supporters of the boss. And for some of them, the process triggered by that investigation, 16 years after the raid it generated, is still alive. They are facing the second degree and, during yesterday’s hearing, the deputy attorney general Luigi Musto made his requests.

He proposed 4 years for Avallone, requesting the reclassification of the crime charged as attempted private violence. One year and 4 months were invoked for Anna Iovine, sister of the repentant boss, 6 years and 6 months for Renato Grasso and acquittal for Marcellino Barracca, Alessandro Di Rosa and Massimiliano Grassi. The attorney general requested confirmation of the confiscation for the brothers Giuseppe and Armando Di Chiara, who, according to the accusation, had reused the clan’s money in the construction of a property.

In the defense team the lawyers Rocco Trombetti, Giuseppe Tessitore, Angelo Raucci, Emilio Martino, Alfonso Quarto, Umberto Pappadia, Raffaele Mascia, Pasquale Diana, Valerio Spigarelli, Alessandro Iazzetti and Maurizio Giovannone.

According to what was claimed by the Prosecutor’s Office, Avallone and his sister-in-law ordered Rosa De Novellis, widow of Carmine Iovine, not to set foot in San Cipriano d’Aversa again and to cease her commercial activities. Grasso would instead have managed the video poker and sports betting sector on behalf of the Iovine group.

The defendants are to be considered innocent until a possible irrevocable conviction. If the judicial process has landed before the fifth section of the Court of Appeal of Naples 16 years after the raid, it is because the previous second degree verdict was annulled with postponement in 2021. And now, after the indictment, yes he returns to the courtroom in July for the defense arguments.
