Porticoes, green area in Piazza San Ciro and an underground car park

A revolution in terms of traffic and an important step forward for the public greenery of the city of the Royal Palace: the construction of the new underground car park in Piazza San Ciro represents a significant development for the historic center of Porticoes. The construction site already started last week and the delivery of the work is expected in about a year.

At the center of the maxi redevelopment is an area close to the Basilica of San Ciro, which for years has been at the center of heated controversy by the opposition due to the non-use of that space, owned by a private individual. Now, the owner of the area has obtained the concession to create an underground car park, while the upper space will be available to the Basilica, with an area dedicated to citizens and greenery.

The project

According to the first information available to the Municipality, the parking area will contain around 70 stalls, with discounted rates, while the upper part will be transformed into a public garden. For years, uncultivated land has been left at the mercy of weeds, waste and decay. So much so that the opposition in Palazzo Campitelli asked for the expropriation of the area by the Municipality with the aim of creating a multi-purpose pitch. A project already widely anticipated by the municipal council led by the mayor Enzo Cuomowhich granted permits for the construction of an underground car park in place of the decay, as well as a green area which will be entrusted to the basilica in Piazza San Ciro.

«This project is part of a larger restyling operation of the area, aimed at giving prestige to the historic center of Portici – says the councilor Giovanni Iacone – The works for the construction of the underground car park have already begun and as part of the same project, there is an important investment regarding the green area in the upper part, which also extends behind the Basilica of San Ciro: benches and rides for the little ones, available in the church. This is an important redevelopment not only in terms of traffic, with a new parking area that will facilitate access to the historic center and therefore to the market, but also for the elimination of uncultivated and unused land, which will now be available of citizens”.

In short, the situation in Piazza San Ciro and therefore in the entire lower area of ​​the city is destined to improve, especially in terms of traffic: in particular in the center and Granatello a problem related to the lack of parking spaces persists, especially during summer weekends. A problem that will be substantially contained thanks to the creation of the new underground parking area at the foot of the Basilica.

The historic center

A new face for the historic center, therefore. Not just car parks and green areas: the objective of the municipal administration is to redevelop the entire historic center of the city of the Royal Palace. A massive redevelopment intervention which involves funds amounting to over five million euros and which has already started: the works in the market axis are proceeding at a rapid pace and among the most important projects is the removal and restructuring of the ancient paving to eliminate dangerous potholes, a new lighting system and the widening of sidewalks. And the redevelopment work on Piazza San Ciro will also begin shortly, with a new churchyard.
