Green light for pigeon hunting, the TAR extinguishes the hopes of environmentalists – Turin News

Hard times ahead for the Turin pigeons. The Tar of Piedmont has rejected the appeal of the environmentalist associations (Lav, Oipa, Sos Gaia, Enpa, Pan Odv, Pro Natura Turin, National Body for the Protection of Animals Odv and Foundation for Ecospirituality Odv) against the Pigeon containment plan for the years from 2024 to 2029 thus essentially giving the green light for the culling of birds.

«The TAR – they explain from Metropolitan City – has considered unfounded and therefore rejected all five grounds of appeal presented by the associations in order to obtain the annulment of the resolution voted unanimously by the Metropolitan Council on 15 February. The appellant associations were ordered to pay legal costs.”

Under the banner of optimism about the goodness of one’s resolution, The metropolitan city had already started the actions envisaged in the Planstarting with training courses for farmers who intend to engage in the containment of the species. Similar training courses will soon be launched for citizens in possession of a hunting license and for the staff of companies specialized in pigeon containment.

The TAR, among other things, rejected the reference to the alleged dangerous for peopleof the means of control envisaged by the Plan, the use of which is motivated by health needs, and recognized that the metropolitan city in the past has experimented indirect and non-bloody methods for pigeon control, with unsatisfactory results in terms of reducing population density in the area. Furthermore, according to the judges, the use of nets or cages does not expose other animal species to the risk of being killed by mistake, since the cages must be checked at least once a day, in order to free specimens of birds belonging to other species possibly captured.

The Plan, we remember, provides in detail the measures for the containment of animals which, in rural areas, would cause considerable damage to crops while in urban ones they pose hygiene and decorum problems of public spaces. In urban areas, the use of trap cages is envisaged, while in extra-urban areas the use of actual hunting is also possible.
