PISA – The celebrations to celebrate the 850th anniversary of the Pisa Bell Tower, the most famous in the world, will be in full swing until August 9th. The program is promoted by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana which this morning in the presence of the archbishop, Giovanni Paolo Benottoand the mayor, Michele Contipresented it to the press.

The president of the Opera della Primaziale Pisana Andrea Maestrelli: «The program will have an important addendum in December with a new chamber opera commissioned and produced by the Pisa Theater Foundation. A new opera that wants to pay homage to one of the most famous monuments in the world through a story, set in Pisa towards the end of 1100, full of fun, surprises and trepidation. On June 5th the film “The Tower of Pisa is alive” by will be screened at the Cineclub Arsenale Daniele Segreintroduced by Sandra Lischi and Emanuele Segre. The film, which takes the passage of the seasons as its temporal sequence and some notations from illustrious travelers as its literary and narrative score, compares itself with the famous Piazza del Duomo in Pisa as a crossroads of peoples and represents its linguistic Babel as a symbol of peace and meeting between the people. Far from a classic documentary structure as well as from an illustrative and didactic dimension, the film aims to restore and strengthen the echo of an artistic creation known throughout the world, demonstrating its character.

From 12 June to 31 July the exhibition entitled “Bewitched by the Tower – Pisa in the collection of DI Malkov, the Muscovite Campanilista”, proposed by the University of Pisa, in collaboration with the Pisan Historical Society, will be held in the courtyard of Palazzo La Sapienza, University of Pisa. Editors: Dr Antonella Magliocchi (Unipi), prof Gabriella Garzella (SSP), prof Chiara Bodei (Unipi) and prof. Paolo Mancarella (Unipi).

From 15 June to 30 September the exhibition curated by the professor will be organized in the premises of the Palazzo dell’Opera in Piazza Duomo Stefano Renzoni, entitled “The Tower in the Mirror. The many lives of the Bell Tower of Pisa Cathedral”. The idea is to represent the Bell Tower through a story of works, images, restorations, prints, photographs of the monument over the centuries, whose primary intent will be to give clarity to the visitor that the Tower of Pisa is the Bell Tower of the Cathedral .

On 25 June in the foyer of the Verdi theater “Parallel game: the Leaning Tower by Mino Trafeli” will be presented, a documentary that tells the story of the 1981 Carnival, made with the support of Cineclub Arsenale. Starting from the sketch of Mino Trafeliwe retrace the history of Ragione insidiata, the program of shows and varieties organized by the Theater of Pisa and the Municipality for the 1981 Carnival. The story of this incredible and epochal page of city history which created a spectacular urban disguise and involved the most important places and symbols of Pisa, including the leaning bell tower, will be shown to the public through the screening of a film with Mino Trafeli at work on the construction of the Tower, filmed live at the time and now edited and produced by the Cineclub Arsenale with the voice of Roberto Scarpaand the testimonies of some protagonists.

On 3-5-10-12 July the “Music under the Tower” event will take place in the cloister of the Opera Museum with the following programme:
– Estro-Orchestar with Chiara Morandi violin ‘The Eight Seasons’ music by Antonio Vivaldi-Astor Piazzolla.
– Vivacidade Trio, music by Rossini, Bellini, Tarrega, Albeniz, Piazzolla, Morricone.
– Trio Kanon, music by LV Beethoven, F.Mendelssohn.
– Simona Molinari who on March 7 was awarded the prestigious Callas Tribute Prize in New York, an international recognition dedicated to Maria Callas

On July 16th a meeting will take place in the Cathedral entitled “Science and faith” with the presence of the Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça and the professor Riccardo Zucchirector of the University of Pisa.

On July 19th a reading will take place from the Campanile (with possible musical accompaniment), by the actor Toni Servillo of literary passages referring to the Bell Tower and the Piazza del Duomo.

On August 9th closing concert in the Cathedral square with one of the most successful and popular tenors in the world, the tenor Francesco Meli accompanied on the piano by the maestro Davide Cavallini. The initiative is open to the city free of charge and at the same time the Bell Tower will be illuminated as well as a possible free entry to the monuments/museums in Piazza del Duomo, probably with a form of quota to avoid excessive turnout.
