Migrants landed in Salerno: amidst violence, suffering and the desire for freedom

Salerno

Stories of incredible suffering and, in some cases, even of unprecedented violence. These are those experienced by the 84 migrants who landed yesterday in the port of Salerno and who were rescued on Friday afternoon by the volunteers of the Geo Barents, the Doctors Without Borders ship that recovered them off the Maltese coast, in two rescue operations. One part was on board a dinghy, another had undertaken the journey with a small boat. Both boats were now in trouble and only the intervention of the rescuers prevented the worst. Yesterday evening, after a long and tiring journey, the migrants were welcomed in the port of Salerno.

Among them there was also a one-year-old Eritrean child who undertook the journey with his mother and father. Among the three women on board, however, was a 17-year-old girl who initially appeared very shaken and scared. It is no coincidence that, after arriving on the quay of the Manfredi pier, she hid among the benches, fearing having to separate from the family with whom she had shared the crossing. Once she calmed down, she told the cultural mediators that she had undertaken the journey to join her family in Belgium. A matter that the Social Policies office of the Municipality is ready to take charge of which, through the councilor Paola De Roberto, will verify the story to understand if the conditions for family reunification exist.

Furthermore, a migrant was treated in hospital in Salerno for burns suffered during the crossing due to the mixture of fuel and sea water.
