“Lo disgust”, inspired by the murder of Ilaria Alpi

The third edition of the Sguardi season ends on Thursday 6 June, in the municipality of Pianezza, in the province of Turin, with “Lo disgust” inspired by the murder of Ilaria Alpi and with the artistic direction of Silvia Mercuriati, dedicated to Non-ordinary Stories. The season, organized with the support of the Piedmont Region and the Municipality of Pianezza, with the patronage of Città Metropolitana, in collaboration with Fondazione Piemonte dal vivo, Villa Lascaris and Barrocco, is a “Project selected from the Corto Circuito 2022 – Piemonte dal Vivo tender” .

On stage, at 9pm, “Lo disgust” – Non-random murder of Ilaria Alpi in our twenty-first region by Stefano Massini, directed by Giorgio Sangati and starring Anna Tringali. Mogadishu, Somalia, March 20, 1994, 1:04 pm. Ilaria Alpi, an Italian journalist for TG3, is killed together with her camera operator Miran Hrovatin. In a Somalia strewn with colonial ruins and memories, an unbreakable silence covers the maneuvers of colluding and corrupt businessmen.

It is this silence that Ilaria attacks head-on, opening up glimpses of unprecedented truth about an Italian Africa torn apart by internal wars, amidst toxic waste, pharaonic and useless public works. Again, arms trafficking, cholera epidemics, Islamic fundamentalism, pirates, sultans. Finally grotesque tricolor parties to celebrate international cooperation, officially there to bring back peace and hope.

Thirty years after that murder, however, the majority of Italians are even unaware of the existence of the twenty-first Italian region, Somalia; ignores the interests, the speculations, the billions, the “zeros” that the Italians have earned at the expense of the population; but, above all, it ignores how and why Ilaria Alpi was killed and in death, humiliated by the cover-up of the investigations.

The show will be staged in the park of Villa Lascaris. Since 1968, Villa Lascaris has become a House of Spirituality and Culture, a training and reception center of the Archdiocese of Turin, which promotes and organizes cultural and spiritual activities and events. A large English garden full of exotic and native trees; a green lawn dotted with statues and ancient architectural fragments, overlooking the mountains and the plain. The park of Villa Lascaris is an oasis of beauty and silence.
