At Santa Maria di Terni a unique service in Italy: 24-hour presence of an obstetric anesthetist

“Giving birth without pain and safely in the Santa Maria hospital in Terni. Our first 10 years.” It is the title of the national congress which will take place on Saturday 1 June at the Hotel Garden in Terni. A good 10 years have passed since a group of obstetric anesthetists was established at the “Santa Maria” Hospital in Terni, whose mission is both to guarantee a safe path during childbirth, but also to ensure a pain-free birth . A service that involves the presence of an obstetric anesthetist 24 hours a day, a service that few Italian hospitals have, a jewel of the Terni hospital. For this reason, Dr. Rita Commissari, Director of SC Anesthesia and Resuscitation of the Santa Maria Terni Hospital, and Dr. Giuseppe De Masi, Medical Director of SC Anesthesia and Resuscitation of the Santa Maria Terni Hospital, strongly wanted to organize a congress in which nationally renowned speakers will participate, together with experts in obstetric anesthesia from Padua, Bologna, Rome, Ferrara, Parma and L’Aquila and speakers from the Terni Hospital. With the aim of taking stock of the situation 10 years after the provision of the service to the Terni Hospital and comparing the situation of the Terni hospital with that of other regional and national realities. At the same time, raising awareness of the need to guarantee safety within the Maternal – Infant Department and in the delivery room.

During the event, the roles of professionals at the moment of childbirth will be analyzed and explored, such as the anesthetist, the gynecologist, the obstetrician, the neonatologist and the interventional radiologist, whose mission is unique; control pain and protect the mother and newborn. At a time when the level of development of a health system is also based on the ability to reduce maternal morbidity/mortality, objectives also strongly requested by the World Health Organization.

The event will start at 8 am and end at 6 pm. The day will be divided into two different moments. In the first session the issue of the “Delivery room and anesthetist, an increasingly relevant combination” will be addressed. While in the second part the focus will be on “Critical issues in Obstetrics and organizational systems compared”. The highest officials of the Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI), the bishop of the Diocese of Terni – Narni – Amelia, Francesco Antonio Soddu and the political and administrative authorities of the Umbria Region will be present.
