Schifani: “June 2, symbol of unity for all Italians”
“June 2 represents the symbol of unity and democracy for all Italians and is a fundamental date in the history of our country. Today must also be a moment of reflection and pride and for this reason we cannot fail to remember the sacrifice and commitment of many men and women who fought for a better future, contributing to building the Republic” declares the president of the Sicilian Region Renato Schifani, on the occasion of Republic Day.
For the occasion, the Sicilian Region was present at the traditional parade of the Armed Forces at the Imperial Forums in Rome with a representation of its Forestry Corps and the banner.
Celebration with flag raising and laurel wreaths also in Palermo
Republic Day in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, also in Palermo. The prefect of Palermo Massimo Mariani, the mayor of Palermo Roberto Lagalla and the regional councilor Nunzia Albano laid a commemorative wreath at the war memorial.
The celebrations for the 78th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic took place in front of delegations from the army, state police, carabinieri, financial police, coast guard, firefighters and officers from the penitentiary and municipal police.
“We must remember where we come from – said Prefect Mariani – a destroyed country that had known twenty years of dictatorial regime. But we must also be aware of what Italians are capable of doing. Republic Day also serves to give confidence. In particular, this year, June 2nd falls a few days before an important electoral event. It is not rhetorical to say that it arrives at a crucial stage from an international point of view, with great dangers on the horizon. Certainly the European values of which the war was the negation must be underlined.”
