What happened: Mattarella’s message to the prefects, Northern League member Borghi’s post, Salvini’s words
The Italian Republic is “inserted today in the broader community of the European Union which we have decided to give life to with the other free peoples of the continent and whose sovereignty we will consecrate, in a few days, with the election of the European Parliament”. The words are from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and are contained in a message sent to the prefects so that they can act as interpreters in the initiatives promoted at a local level on the occasion of 2 June, on the occasion of the Republic Day anniversary. The message was released yesterday by the Quirinale.

If the president really thinks that sovereignty belongs to the European Union instead of Italy, for consistency’s sake he should resign – he asks -, because its function would no longer make sense”.
On TV, to those who ask him about Borghi’s tweet, Matteo Salvini He says he hasn’t read it. But, after listening to its contents, he does not distance himself at all, approving the concepts. “Today is the feast of Italians and of the Republic, not of European sovereignty. We have a President of the Republic because there is a Republic, an Italian national sovereignty”, says the deputy prime minister, who was not present at the reception at the Quirinale yesterday, because he was busy in the rally with Roberto Vannacci in Milan, nor today did he participate in the military parade at the Imperial Forums. “I think of Europe as a set of sovereign, autonomous and free states that share some energies, some forces, but national sovereignty is absolutely fundamental”.
