This morning the traditional commemorative ceremony took place to celebrate the 78th anniversary of the proclamation of the Italian Republic at the war memorial in via Unità d’Italia in the municipality of Caserta.

The mayor of Caserta Carlo Marino, together with all the civil, military and religious authorities, paid homage to the fallen by placing a laurel wreath in their memory.

As usual, a representation of the provincial command of the Caserta Fire Brigade, led by commander Eng. Paolo Massimi, joined the other forces present on the guard of honour.

Subsequently, the ceremony moved to Piazza Vanvitelli, where the Fire Brigade placed the tricolor on the facade of the Prefecture building.

The story June 2

June 2, 2024 marks the 78th birthday of the Italian Republic, our beloved country. Since the Italians were called to decide, through an institutional referendum in June 1946, whether to give our country a monarchical or republican form of government, we have come a long way.

This historic referendum represented a double revolution, since it was the first time in Italy that universal suffrage was used, allowing women to participate in the vote. The supporters of the republic prevailed and on 18 June 1946 the Court of Cassation officially proclaimed the birth of the Italian Republic after 85 years of reign.

The results of the referendum were formally communicated on the evening of 10 June 1946, but the official proclamation of the Republic was postponed to 18 June due to protests raised by people who noticed a minimal difference in votes between supporters of the Republic and those of the monarchy.

However, on 18 June the Court of Cassation definitively confirmed the victory of the Republic. Since then, every year we celebrate Republic Day on June 2 to commemorate this important event in our history.

On the same day, the members of the Constituent Assembly responsible for drafting the Constitution of the Italian Republic were also elected. This task was fundamental to establishing the principles and values on which our Republic is founded.

Today we look to the future with pride as we remember the past and celebrate our journey as a nation. Best wishes to our beloved Italian Republic!

Republic Day Caserta

Here are some interesting statistics: 89% of voters participated in the vote. The Republic obtained 54.3% of the votes in favor, while the monarchy received 45.7%. A curious fact is that the Republic won in the north, while the monarchy prevailed in the south.

Therefore, every year we will celebrate the birthday of our Republic with an impressive demonstration organized in Rome. During the event, the President of the Republic lays a laurel wreath in honor of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria followed by a majestic military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali.

The first celebration of the Italian Republic Day was held on June 2, 1947. In 1948 the first military parade also took place along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome. Finally, in 1949, June 2nd was definitively proclaimed a national holiday.
