hundreds of participants to re-enact the battle of 1734 – BitontoLive.it

The battle of Bitonto on 25 May 1734 will be re-enacted this morning in the historical procession that will cross the city starting at 10am, the highlight of the long organization managed by the Accademia della Battaglia association with president Concetta Tota. Hundreds of people in costume will parade, to bring back to life a page of history and tradition that belongs to the DNA of the Bitonto people.

“At dawn on May 26, 1734, General Montemar, in command of the Spanish army, was thinking of sacking Bitonto to punish it for its loyalty to the enemy. The Spanish army was about to lay waste to the city when the Immaculate Conception appeared to the general and ordered him: «Do not insult this city, because it is the apple of my eye and the citizens are my children!». Following the miraculous event, which saved Bitonto from destruction, the patronage of the city was entrusted to the Immaculate Madonna, already acclaimed patron saint in 1703 for having saved Bitonto from an earthquake. The new king of the Kingdom of Naples, Charles of Bourbon, appointed Montemar as Duke of Bitonto and in memory of the miracle had an 18 meter high obelisk erected on the site of the battlefield, today Piazza XXVI Maggio 1734″.
