FRANCAVILLA. Three accidents, the ACA works and the closed San Silvestro tunnel sent traffic into a tailspin yesterday in Francavilla. Inconveniences both on the city road system and on the open variant section.
The most significant episode occurred inside the Le Piane tunnel, where a small car lost control and then collided with the wall. He was driving the vehicle AV, a 50-year-old originally from Sicily but resident in Pescara, was not seriously injured and taken to the emergency room. The Chieti traffic police intervened on site and, following their investigations, discovered that the man had a final sentence of 6 years in prison for the crime of bankruptcy. For this reason the man, after the necessary treatment, was taken over by the police and will now have to serve his sentence. In the meantime, after the removal of the vehicle, the tunnel was reopened to traffic.
Two other episodes then occurred during the morning: the most curious concerns a truck that got stuck in the underpass in via Teodorico Marino. According to the reconstruction, the driver would have miscalculated the measurements, ending up destroying the rear part of the vehicle which was unable to pass inside the underpass, while the tractor vehicle continued forward for a few metres. However, the man did not suffer any consequences. Local police officers intervened on site.
On Viale Alcione, however, it was in all likelihood a fall of sleep that caused the other accident of the day which involved a woman of around 70 years of age, who ended up with her car against a tree. The woman was transported by ambulance to the emergency room in Chieti, suffering chest trauma. The intervention of the Chieti firefighters was then necessary on site, who removed the vehicle and made the road safe before traffic was restored. All this has had a negative impact on traffic, made even more clogged by the works that the ACA is carrying out on the Adriatica national road near Pretaro, which forces the roadway to alternate two-way traffic. Yesterday afternoon there were queues and slowdowns, with waits of over half an hour to be able to travel along the affected stretch of road. The San Silvestro tunnel should reopen in a month and with it the entire variant: a breath of fresh air for the entire road system.
