Bad weather in Trentino, landslides and mudslides. Specially observed lakes: «Exceptional rainfall»

Trentino has been hit by a new wave of bad weather which has brought with it many inconveniences linked to landslides, mudslides and even some flooding. The firefighters carried out over fifty interventions throughout the provincial territory. As the Province points out, the exceptional rainfall recorded in May caused a rise in all the lakes. For this reason, civil protection technicians are monitoring the levels of bodies of water and rivers.

The most delicate situations

«The attention – they report from Piazza Dante – is concentrated on the most delicate situations that, in some cases, have occurred take interventions to encourage the outlet capacity of the emissaries». In Lagolo, for example, pumping systems came into action to lower the level of the body of water. It is no coincidence that a yellow alert had been issued in recent hours. Also yesterday, the volunteer and permanent firefighters of Trento were mobilized due to the fall of some plants along the Valsugana state road 47, in the Tenna area and also in the capital. In Pergine-Valsugana, however, a landslide caused a retaining wall to collapse on via al Compet. Furthermore, due to the rains, sThe Canezza landslide has started again, a circumstance which triggered the temporary closure of the road below. The roadway was reopened to traffic after the inspection by the Geological Survey.

The road system

As regards traffic, the Road Management Service announces that the closure of the provincial road 135 (at kilometer 9.960 in the locality of Maso Filzerhof, in the municipality of Fierozzo) remains in force due to the erosion of the soil which has caused roadway failure. The provincial road 233 of Roveda is also closed (at kilometer 3, in the municipality of Frassilongo), due to the collapse of the cliff containing the slope upstream of the roadway. «The population – we read in the note issued by the Province – is invited to lend maximum attention to the conditions of the places to be traveled”. In these phases it is particularly recommended to avoid approaching watercourses.

Record rainfall

And with the rainfall of the last few hours 2024 becomes the year of records regarding the rain in the capital. According to Meteotrentino data (with a trend marked since 1975 in the Roncafort station), in 2024 the rainy days recorded so far have in fact been 53, the maximum number recorded. The average is 32 rainy days, with the minimum of 15 days recorded in 1976. Record also in terms of rainfall quantity: since the beginning of the year, 633 millimeters of rain have fallen in the capital, the highest figure since the beginning of the records. The average was 330 millimeters, the lowest figure it was 94.8 recorded in 2003. However, the sun is expected to shine again over the weekend. Meteotrentino predicts mostly sunny skies from today until Tuesday although some showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours cannot be ruled out, more likely in the mountains. More stable weather is expected from Wednesday.
