Catania thief killed in Reggio Calabria, investigating judge validates the arrest of the butcher

The arrest of Francesco Putortì, the 48-year-old butcher accused of having stabbed two people from Catania who had attempted to steal from his home, was validated by the investigating judge of the Court of Reggio Calabria.

On Monday morning the butcher apparently killed 30-year-old Alfio Stancampiano, who had entered his home in the Oliveto di Rosario Valanidi district in Reggio Calabria, and injured another, Giovanni Bruno, 46 years old, also from Catania.

The first, wounded with a knife, was abandoned by his accomplices in the gardens of the Morelli hospital, where he later died, while the second, after having ferried to Sicily, was forced to go to the Messina hospital where he is hospitalized. In justifying the arrest in prison, the investigating judge Giovanna Sergi maintains that the circumstance for which Putortì “did not suffer any injuries, the number of blows inflicted on the two unfortunates in vital parts and, as for Bruno, on his back, the fact that the two had not brandished weapons against the suspect, the same reconstruction of the facts provided by the latter when he described the immediate removal of the thieves from the house as soon as the escape route down the stairs had opened for them, suggests that the The manifest intent of the criminals, alerted to the owner’s presence in the house, was precisely to immediately flee from those places, perhaps pushing the owner to make way, and not to harm his safety”.

Defended by lawyers Maurizio Condipodero and Giulia Dieni, Putortì, according to the judge, was not in danger of his life.

“Even in the presence of an ongoing attack on property (considering the presence of the two in the house), – writes the investigating judge – in this case the danger appears to be lacking, understood as the probability or significant possibility of suffering an attack on one’s own physical safety”.

From here, we read in the order, “the man, in fact, knowing that his wife and son were out of the house and pushed to defend his property, rather than resorting to the police, as he could easily have done, especially since the thieves had not noticed his arrival, he had decided to arm himself with a knife and surprise the two whom he then fatally struck. It is no coincidence that this reconstruction is confirmed by the number of blows inflicted on the victims, which suggests a change in the reactive and unnecessary conduct of the suspect”.

With regard to Putortì, for whom the request for house arrest made by the lawyers was rejected, the investigating judge Sergi recognized not only the danger of escape and contamination of the evidentiary material but also “the concrete and current danger that the suspect commits other serious crimes of the same type as the one being prosecuted, considering the methods and circumstances of the criminal conduct, which demonstrate a cunning and facility in illicit action which promise the repetition of similar behaviour”.
