The amount of high fines for waste abandoned in the first 6 months of 2024 by the environmental inspection service, active for around 10 years but significantly strengthened starting from 2018, not only in the number of inspectors and control shifts, but also in the use of video surveillance devices located throughout the territory. A figure which exceeds, considering the 12-month totals of 2022 (€89,000) and 2023 (€75,000), the previous two years and which, starting this year, will be used to contribute to the costs of the service, i.e. the tax on waste.

An effective control system which, as councilor Marco Sacchetti explains, “does not have the priority of ‘making money’, but rather of limiting the number of abandonments in the area which entail huge removal costs”. Compared to this, the number of interventions for the removal of abandoned waste fell by 57% between 2019 and 2023 (from 7411 interventions to 3192), while at the same time the number of requests for the collection of bulky waste (+12%) and delivery of bulky waste to collection centers (from 364 t in 2019 to 904 t in 2023). At the same time, the number of abandonments continues to fall, 991 in the first 6 months of the year and with a projection of reaching 2000 for the year, with a further reduction of more than 30% compared to the previous year. “An important control activity, which can also count on the fruitful collaboration of the Municipal Police – continues councilor Sacchetti -. In particular recently, thanks to a mutual coordination effort we are freeing the area from numerous vehicles abandoned for years on public land. And we are also working in good coordination with the Carabinieri for Forest Protection on various abandonments of special waste. A constant commitment to protect the environment and the decorum of the city.”
