Appeal to vote

In less than a week now we will be voting, at the end of a frantic and very low profile electoral campaign, inadequate in content, off topic, entirely focused on our daily shop problems, partly real and partly constructed and propagated by information driven when not enslaved.

We are going through one of the most difficult moments in our short republican history. The ingredients are all there: an economic and social crisis that those who govern us minimize by disguising the facts of reality; a war in the center of Europe in which we participate more or less surreptitiously; another in the Middle East, which no one seems willing to stop and which involves a daily massacre of civilians, mainly children; underpaid and precarious work disguised as growth by a lying GDP; the persistent and now unjustified high cost of energy and creeping inflation which have only one of the causes in the war; a climate crisis of such magnitude as to endanger the very survival of our planet itself.

And above all, an off-topic electoral campaign, because we will not vote for or against Meloni or for or against Salvini, but on the election of our representation in the European Parliament. So we would have had to discuss our idea of Europe, its limits and its extension, its role and its powers, the functioning of its institutions and its decision-making criteria.

We didn’t do it or we only did it partially. In short, we live in the uncertainty of the present, forgetful of our history and the most recent past and without a perspective for the future, with the widespread perception of the detachment between politics and society, or rather between this political class and the moods of this manipulated society.

Nonetheless, or precisely because of all this, not voting is not the solution. The Anpi is not a party and cannot and does not want to give voting instructions, but it invites us to reflect that not voting is a surrender, a renunciation of a right won with effort and battles in decades that now seem distant and not they are, it is the refusal of that minimum of assumption of responsibility and of that minimum of burden, that of choice, indispensable in order not to fall forever into indifference and useless wordy discontent.

However, a choice within the founding values of our association, which are opposition to fascism, the historical one and the creeping, disguised and changeable one that permeates many parties and movements; the defense and application of our Constitution, a Constitution that many would like to overturn: transforming Italy into a Presidential Republic, which would concentrate all powers in the head of government; applying the so-called differentiated autonomy, which would then mean differentiating citizens’ rights on the basis of regional belonging.

By giving an example, more healthcare and more schooling to some, less schooling and less healthcare to others. In a nutshell, ANPI once again appeals to participation and the values of freedom, equality and tolerance.
