Dredging port of Barletta, Caracciolo: “Works will resume in September after the summer stop”

“The dredging works on the seabed of the port of Barletta continue. The removal of the non-contaminated sediment is almost complete and after the stop imposed by the harbor office which prohibits the carrying out of work from 15 May to 15 September, it will be possible to reach the conclusion”. Thus the regional councilor of the Democratic Party, Filippo Caracciolo at the end of a hearing in the fifth commission which he requested to obtain an update on the state of the work.

“The impossibility of obtaining an exemption from the stop from the harbor office – explains Caracciolo – forced the suspension of the works which so far have seen the removal of over 50 thousand cubic meters of uncontaminated sediment out of the total 70 thousand present on the seabed. From 15 September it will take around two weeks to remove the remaining uncontaminated sediments and then move on to the contaminated ones, the quantity of which is 27 thousand cubic metres, a figure which could vary in the event that critical issues emerge from the results of the analyzes on the sampling carried out in the months past.”

“Regarding the contaminated sediments – continues the regional councilor – the Ionian Sea Port System Authority has confirmed the availability of a storage area within the port of Taranto for 30 months. This area can be used to deliver the contaminated sediments, always awaiting testing of the landfill where they will have to be definitively deposited”.

“The dredging is a work that the city of Barletta and the entire territory have been waiting for for years. As I have always done since the start of the process – concludes Caracciolo – I will monitor the situation to ensure compliance with the expected deadlines”.
