The Stazzi Marathon shows how it is possible to coexist with bears: this historic mountain bike race crosses some of the areas populated by the Marsican bear in Abruzzo without interfering with its habitat

There Stazzi Marathonnow in its twenty-first edition, continues to represent a virtuous example of peaceful coexistence between sporting competitions and the rich biodiversity of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.

Scheduled for June 2nd, this historic one mountain bike race crosses some of the areas most densely populated by the Marsican bear in Abruzzo, respecting natural spaces and promoting harmonious coexistence between participants and wild animals.

Organized by the Scanno MTB Association for twenty years, the Marathon degli Stazzi attracts over 650 bikers in the charming ancient village of Scanno, offering them a route that crosses natural reserves, special protection areas and territories inhabited by the Marsican bear. About 5 km of the route are located within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, while another 55 km cross the Monte Genzana Regional Nature Reserve and other protected areas.

Attention to the conservation of the environment and the safety of wild animals is a priority for the organizers, who have designed a route that respects the natural habitat of the Marsican bear and other wild species present in the area. The race takes place entirely on authorized cart tracks and paths, ensuring minimal impact on the local ecosystem.

Parallel to the competition, information activities are organized by the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, to raise awareness among participants about the behavior to follow in the presence of wildlife and promote harmonious coexistence between bikers and animals.

The race route offers breathtaking views and passes through places rich in history, such as the village of Frattura and the “Chiarano-Sparvera” State Reserve. The climb to the Monte Genzana pass, the highest point of the route, offers a spectacular view of the Mountain Grand Prix and the surrounding peaks. This year’s novelty is represented by the climb of “Le Refuijete”, a demanding challenge that will take participants up to 1500 meters above sea level of the ruins of the “Casa del Monte”.

The Stazzi Marathon is not just a sporting race, but an opportunity to explore the natural and cultural beauty of Abruzzo, taste the local food and wine excellences and immerse yourself in the history of ancient villages such as Scanno, famous for its timeless photographic shots. The week preceding the race is an opportunity for athletes and enthusiasts to fully experience the area, enjoying its naturalistic and cultural wonders and sharing the passion for sport and nature.
