The GMJO – PORDENONEOGGI.IT spring residency starts on May 27th

PORDENONE – With over 100 of the most talented young musicians from all over Europe – aged between 18 and 26 – the most famous and celebrated youth orchestra in the world, the Gustav Mahler, returns to the Teatro Verdi in Pordenone for the ninth consecutive year Jugendorchester which selects the best young musicians around from more than 2500 candidates with rigorous annual auditions which take place in 25 European cities. A project of advanced musical education that is renewed thanks to the support of the Region and PromoTurismo FVG with the Municipality of Pordenone.

Like musical capitals such as Vienna, Hamburg, Dresden and Salzburg, Pordenone is not only a stopover for the Orchestra, but has now established itself as the first city of residence – in fact, the Spring Tour 2024 will start from Pordenone – and confirms two periods of artistic residency: the spring one in progress and then between 4 and 18 August, for a total of 31 days in total between musical training and concerts.

The Orchestra, accompanied to Pordenone by the GMJO Superintendent Alexander Meraviglia-Crivelli, is currently carrying out its rehearsal sessions under the coordination of the young assistant conductor, the German Christian Blex, already launched on a great international career.

To seal the residency, next June 1st, the Italian and European debut concert of the Spring Tour 2024 will stand out under the direction of the greatest active conductor, Kirill Petrenko, Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducting for the first time of the GMJO: an event of historic proportions for our region. But already on Monday 27 May a first exclusive concert is scheduled at 6pm with GMJO directed by Christian Blex, who has also been Petrenko’s assistant since 2022.

Music by Schönberg and Brahms is on the program. Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is the first wide-ranging composition composed by Schönberg, a symphonic poem of great emotional intensity. The famous Symphony no. is no less intense in terms of intensity. 2 by Johannes Brahms, one of the greatest achievements of late Romantic symphonism, which we will listen to in the certainly profound, innovative and highly emotionally engaging reading that Blex will be able to offer.

“We are very happy to return to the Teatro Verdi, which has become home for GMjo since 2015,” explains Crivelli. «For us, Pordenone is the place where the magic begins: on the stage of its Theater the Orchestra meets for the first time to prepare its concert and the first concert of the Spring Tour with Kirill Petrenko together with our assistant conductor Christian Blex .

The one with Petrenko is a debut of the utmost importance for us, which sees the artistic and musical director of the Berliner Philharmoniker – in this one of the successors of our founder Claudio Abbado – conducting Bruckner’s grandiose Fifth Symphony, another piece of the project which sees the Verdi and GMJO united in bringing the greatest conductors in the world to Pordenone every year.” «For me, working with GMJO is the greatest of privileges» underlines Christian Blex.

«These young musicians are not only among the most talented of their generation in all of Europe, but they are animated by a truly rare fire and at the same time capable of great musical maturity and discipline».

Pre-sales underway for the concert on May 27th with special prices for Under26s. All the info www.teatroverdipordenone.it
