The South Tyrolean champion, officially number one in the ranking since June 10, is preparing to begin the defense of his throne

It’s the day he has definitively handed Jannik Sinner into historycertifying the achievement of a goal that before him only 28 tennis players had had the pleasure of celebrating: that of number one position in the world ranking.
With a run-up that has had an incredible surge since last October at least until the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Madrid – a tournament that Sinner abandoned due to well-known hip problems – the native of San Candido managed to oust him from the throne Novak Djokovic even earlier than expected. Of course, the Serbian champion’s nightmare 2024 has helped the ambitious plan of Simone Vagnozzi’s pupil, but Jannik’s consistency in recent months has been truly noteworthy.
Many tournaments won – including, the icing on the cake, the Australian Open – consecutive winning streaks like never seen before in Italian tennis (and in general at his young age) and progress on all surfaces they made Jannik a champion capable of reaching any peak. Yes, but now that the maximum level has been reached, many people are asking themselves: ‘How long will Sinner remain number one?’. After beating him in the semi-final and subsequently winning the Musketeers Cup in the final against Sascha Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz took second place in the standings. Bringing the same South Tyrolean talent closer in terms of points.
The ATP ranking updated with real-time results, however, says that the native of Murcia still has a gap of 945 points from the new Italian idol. At least until after Wimbledon, Carlitos will not be able to overcome Jannikhaving to defend 2500 points, the result of the victories 12 months ago on the Queen’s courts and at the London Championships.
For its part, however, Sinner has to defend ‘only’ 885 points, those put on the farm in 2023 thanks to the round of 16 reached in Halle and the semi-final in the English Major. With a Novak Djokovic even unsure of participating in Wimbledon after the meniscus operation, the other pursuers (Zverev in the lead) would be called upon to undertake an almost impossible task. That of undermining Sinner thanks to the results obtained at the All England Club.
