We went to Cala Violina, one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, on the Tuscan Maremma coast

Discover Cala Violina, one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, immersed in the Tuscan Maremma. Enjoy the melodic sand, crystal clear waters and an unforgettable natural experience.

Immersed in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, Cala Violina is a hidden gem that enchants visitors with its uncontaminated beauty. This corner of paradise, reachable only on foot or by bicycle, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and included in 2023 among the most beautiful beaches in Italy. Cala Violina is a strip of light sand, enclosed between two headlands, Punta Martina and Punta Le Canne, which embraces the crystalline sea and is surrounded by thick Mediterranean scrub.

Why is it called Cala Violina?

Cala Violina owes its name to a natural phenomenon that makes it unique: the tiny quartz grains of its sand produce a delicate melody with every step. Sound beaches, like this one, are a rare and fascinating phenomenon, already described in Marco Polo’s travel stories. There are barely a hundred places in the world with similar characteristics, and Cala Violina is one of these natural treasures.

Cala Martina

Continuing the excursion, before arriving at Cala Violina you come across Cala Martina, the beach from which Garibaldi, the hero of two worlds, managed to save himself thanks to the car of a group of local patriots, after a troubled escape. This historical event is commemorated with a half-bust of the famous Italian leader, created by the Grosseto artist Tolomeo Faccendi, located along the path that leads to the beach.

Cala Martina is a narrow bay, with a length of about 600 meters and a width of about 10 meters. This small and intimate environment is ideal for snorkelling lovers, thanks to its predominantly stony seabed and the crystal clear waters that bathe it. The bay offers a fascinating underwater experience, allowing you to explore a rich variety of marine flora and fauna.

Upon arrival, Cala Violina reveals itself in all its beauty: a crescent of very fine, white sand, bathed by a crystalline sea with turquoise reflections. The name “Violina” derives from the particular sound that the sand emits when it is stepped on, similar to that of a violin. This natural phenomenon, due to the particular composition of the sand, adds a magical touch to the experience.

The waters of Cala Violina are clear and transparent, ideal for snorkeling and admiring the rich marine life. The colors of the sea, ranging from light blue to intense blue, invite you to dive in and cool off on hot days. The tranquility of the bay, sheltered from the winds, makes swimming an absolute pleasure.

A place to protect

Cala Violina is part of a nature reserve and, to preserve its beauty, access is limited to a controlled number of visitors per day. It is important to respect the park rules, such as not leaving litter and not collecting sand or shells, to ensure that this piece of paradise remains intact for future generations.
