Soveria Mannelli – “The two students of the “Gianni Rodari” Comprehensive Institute of Soveria Mannelli missed the victory by a whisker, but still qualified for the national final of Geometriko – the national geometry tournament promoted by the Bocconi University of Milan – Alice Rubettino and Alessia Visciglia, attending the second class of secondary school” is what we read in a note.

“The flattering result achieved by the two Sovereign students – they specify – is particularly significant as it goes absolutely against the trend compared to the various national surveys which see the southern regions struggling precisely in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in which moreover – being always to the same surveys – girls seem to perform worse than their male classmates”.

“Alice and Alessia – they say – passed various tests at a local and regional level before reaching the finals which were held on May 25th in Civitavecchia. However, Alice and Alessia did not arrive alone in Civitavecchia. in the same city, two other boys from the same institute arrived together with them: Giacomo Gigliotti and Alberto Talarico, from III C who, however, despite qualifying for the national phase, stopped at the previous step of the competition of Rodari therefore represented Calabria during this important scholastic competition”.

Great satisfaction was expressed by the school director, Dr. Teresa Pullia: “Our children filled us with pride thanks to the brilliant results achieved during the final stages of Geometriko which were held in Civitavecchia – she declared – and they demonstrated how it is possible to “learn while having fun”. This is our school model: an open place where children can express themselves, discover their talents and make their work a true “masterpiece”.

“Geometriko – they explain – is a project aimed at the fourth and fifth classes of primary school, the second and third classes of lower secondary school and the classes of the first three years of upper secondary school. The tournament aims to encourage among compulsory school students, through innovative gamification methods, the knowledge of Euclidean geometry”.

“The primary objectives of the model – we read on the Geometrico website – are to bring students closer to Plane Geometry by leveraging conscious individual motivation, in order to guarantee educational success in terms of enhancement compared to starting levels, in other words an improvement in the attitude towards Geometry, no longer seen as a dry subject “for a select few”, but a creative discipline which requires a dynamic and concrete approach before rigor and abstraction”. “Congratulations therefore to the young budding mathematicians, with the best wishes, in particular, to Alice and Alessia, who can follow in the footsteps of many women who, thanks to the study of science and mathematics, have achieved coveted goals, demonstrating the senselessness of many gender stereotypes”.
