The course, organized by the Marche Regional Directorate and financed by the Ministry for Disabilities, aims to improve the safety of deaf people in emergency situations through the use of Sign Language and good communication practices

Ancona25 May 2024 – Organized by the Marche Regional Directorate, the training course aimed at the Fire Brigade of all the Marche Commands on deafness and communication techniques with deaf people in case of emergency, in the presence of the Regional Director Dr. Ing. Cristina D’Angeloby the Commander of Ancona Dr. Ing. Pierpaolo Patrizietti and the president of the National Board of the Deaf, Regional Council of the Marche Diego Pieroni. The course is organized as part of the project approved by the Marche Region called SAIS – Awareness, Accessibility and Independence of Deaf people – Marche 2.0 and is financed with funds from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Ministry for Disabilities.

During the 4-hour training the Fire Brigade receives notes on deafness, good practices for communicating with deaf people, indications on how to build effective communication together in emergency situations, notes on Italian Sign Language (LIS) and its possible use in emergency situations.

The course is taught by Dr. Luca Rotondimulti-graduate deaf person, expert in emergency management for deaf people and with long experience of collaboration also with civil protection structures.

The educational activity scheduled on several dates is always carried out simultaneously both in presence at a Marche Command and remotely through the audio-video connection, to reach the operational staff on duty in other locations in the region.

During the introduction of the training moment, the Regional Director Dr. Eng. Cristina D’Angelo underlined that «the topic might seem niche but in reality, when we find ourselves in emergency moments and faced with deaf people, it is essential to understand how to deal with and talk to them” while Commander Dr. Ing. Pierpaolo Patrizietti reminded his staff of the importance of this training to be quick and effective in rescue operations.

The President of the CR ENS Marche Pieroni highlights that «the Marche is a fragile territory from a seismic and hydrogeological point of view. Ensuring the safety of deaf people in large and small emergency situations is a priority for the National Deaf Organization. Training firefighters on good communication practices with deaf people makes it possible to bridge that delay in the passage of information which can be decisive».
