Tensions in the Campi Flegrei this morning, where some displaced people tried to force their way back into the evacuated apartments in Pozzuoli, in via Dante Alighieri. The episode happened around 11.30 this morning, Thursday 23 May 2024. The police were on site. The mayor of Pozzuoli, Luigi Manzonilaunched an appeal to citizens:

I am writing to you at a time of great importance for our community. As you know, an eviction order has been issued for some of you which requires your cooperation and commitment. I perfectly understand the difficulties and inconveniences that this situation entails, but it is essential to act with patience and responsibility for the good of all. Also because these buildings will have all utilities suspended for safety reasons. I ask you to respect the ordinance, vacate the buildings and collaborate with the police. Your help is essential to ensure the safety of your family and order in our city.

Therefore, anyone who needs to return to their seized apartment in order to take things will have to arrange this with the local police, civil protection or fire brigade. Returns will always be accompanied by authorized personnel and scheduled in a specific time slot. In fact, anyone who violates the seals risks being reported.

In the Campi Flegrei 37 unusable buildings, 46 families evicted

There are 37 buildings declared unusable by the Municipality of Pozzuoli, out of the 388 checked in recent days. About 10 percent. Overall, 1253 intervention reports were received in total between the Fire Brigade, Municipality and Civil Protection. There are 46 families evicted. These are the data updated at 10.00 am today, according to what Fanpage.it has learned from institutional sources.

Where will the displaced people go

But where will the displaced people go? They are currently hosted at the Palatrincone, the Monteruscello sports hall, with accommodation, meals, water, bathrooms and camp beds to sleep on. The structure is reserved, while places last, exclusively for evicted families. For the other people who are still away from home, for various reasons – because for example they have not had the expertise of the technicians or are afraid and do not want to return – the 5 reception areas with tents have been set up, which will remain standing until that the critical phase will not have passed.

By this evening, the union ordinance is expected which will provide the possibility for the evicted families to be hosted at the expense of the Municipality in hotel facilities. The hotels, according to what Fanpage.it understands, should all be located within the province of Naples. The availability of hotels affiliated with the Municipality of Pozzuoli is being evaluated. Among the hypotheses are the Domitian coast and the internal areas. The accommodation facilities will be identified by union ordinance.

What happens to houses declared uninhabitable

What will happen to the houses damaged and declared unusable? They have been entered into a special real estate registry. Once the technical inspection of the houses has been completed, we will proceed to see if they will be subject to further work or if they will have to be demolished. Then the problem will arise of who will do the work. Yesterday, the Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, in a press conference, after the meeting at Palazzo Chigi, rejected the hypothesis of a bonus earthquake. The restoration work on private buildings is not even the responsibility of the Municipality. The hypothesis, put forward by the minister, is that a fund could be created to support the renovations of private properties, but, as announced, it should only concern first homes. Illegal properties are also excluded.
