A fruitful meeting was held at the headquarters of the Moroccan Consulate in Verona between Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Morocco in Calabria Lawyer Domenico Naccari and the Consul General of Verona Mrs. Ouafa Zahi. Various topics were covered: integration of Moroccan citizens in the two regions, intercultural dialogue, protection of minors, twinning, release of consular documentation.

The “Mobile Consulates”

The two diplomats discussed the positive experience of the CDs “Mobile Consulates”. They were in fact successfully organized, in their areas of expertise. In the case of Verona, three have already been carried out, the last of which on 20 April at the spaces of the Trentino Alto Adige Region, and in Calabria at the Municipality of Polistena on 11 May. The two initiatives organized to meet the needs of Moroccan citizens residing in the regions concerned, but far from the consular offices, had the aim of avoiding long and expensive journeys to request documents.

In the rooms made available by the Italian public administrations it was possible to collect or request the documents. In the case of Polistena, around 200 documents were issued while in Trento 450. Consul Zahi highlighted how in Verona the Moroccan community is the first foreign community in numerical terms; in fact it consists of approximately 16,000 Moroccan citizens present in the city of Verona alone, 45,000 in the entire Veneto and is a community well rooted in the Verona area.

A similar reality, although smaller in numerical terms (15,000), is present in Calabria. The two diplomats, having noted the government’s desire to implement the so-called Mattei Plan for Africa, expressed the need to raise awareness among public and private partners in the areas of their respective competence in order to be able to implement what the Government established. Lastly, Consul Naccari recalled the recent cultural twinning pact signed between the Municipalities of Vibo Valentia in Calabria and Dakhla in Morocco. The meeting ended with the consumption of traditional tea and with the agreement to organize cultural events together to encourage knowledge and interaction between different cultures.
