Operation “Behind the Walls”, 5 arrests for robbery and drug dealing in Catania

On 16 May 2024, upon mandate from the District Attorney’s Office, the State Police of Catania executed a precautionary custody order issued on 9 May 2024 by the GIP of the Court of Catania. The measure affected five people: a 43-year-old man, a 53-year-old, two 59-year-olds and a 66-year-old, accused of aggravated robbery, house and car thefts, as well as possession of narcotic substances intended for a prisoner in the prison of Catania, Piazza Lanza.

The investigations, coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office and conducted by the Flying Squad – Crimes against Property and Public Administration Section, led to the collection of evidence against the suspects for a series of predatory crimes. The restraining order is the result of an investigation launched after a robbery on June 6, 2022 in the parking lot of the San Marco hospital, carried out by three men armed with guns on two motorcycles.

The investigations reconstructed in detail the entire criminal operation, which involved an employee of the company responsible for collecting money from parking meters. The role of each member was ascertained: an accomplice observed the withdrawal of the money from a distance, while three individuals carried out the robbery, stealing 2,165.00 euros. The baseman was identified as the 43-year-old.

Continuing their investigations, investigators also identified the 53-year-old as one of the perpetrators of the robbery. Additionally, further allegations emerged relating to the supply of marijuana, hashish and cell phones to a Piazza Lanza inmate. On September 6, 2022, the 43-year-old was arrested red-handed with two pistols and two machine guns in his warehouse.

The Judge for preliminary investigations, at the request of the Public Prosecutor, ordered the precautionary custody in prison for all the suspects. After the formalities, they were transferred to the prison in Piazza Lanza at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.
