On the wall of a building at number 2 of via Michele Pizone, corner of via Martiri Ungheresi, the image of a young woman has taken shape a few days ago; she has a typewriter on her lap, she represents her, she says Antonio Cotecchia, stage name Koté, «the right of everyone to exercise freedom of speech, but also the right to free and pluralistic information». The urban artist painted the new mural in Pastena, the neighborhood where he was born, a stone’s throw from the great building work, Daughters of Time Out of Time, built last March in Tower and dedicated to all women in the name of Trotula, the famous doctor of the Salerno Schola, icon of female emancipation. Koté titled the recent urban regeneration work (it will be inaugurated today at 6pm) Parolana, from ‘O Parulan, a term which, in the Neapolitan language, indicates street vendors who loudly advertise their products. «The parulani, in their free and perpetual wanderings through the streets of Naples and Salerno, did much more – underlines the painter – they told stories and anecdotes which, also thanks to them, have been preserved over time and have come down to us . My Parolana represents the personification of the new generations’ desire to express themselves and live in a society where even journalists are able to work freely and independently.” The Salerno mural is part of the Eu Street Art program promoted by the Representation in Italy of the European Commission. Seven Italian regions, administrations and associations were involved, including Europe Direct Salerno. «We are happy to inaugurate the third mural of the project – he says Massimo Pronio, Head of Communications of the European Commission Representation in Italy – With this work we want to raise awareness among citizens on a very important topic of European current affairs, that of freedom of the press. Information represents a fundamental pillar of our democratic system. At a time when media freedom is being called into question in many countries around the world, the European Union reiterates its commitment to guaranteeing free, accessible and qualified information, combating disinformation and fake news.” The sketch presented by Koté was very popular.

«And here I am weaving in an ideal, but also physical dialogue, with all the kids who feel the need to express themselves, their opinion and also their dissent», says the Salerno artist proudly, also chosen for the first stage of Eu Street Art in Aielli, a small village in Abruzzo, where his Futura which holds the globe invites us to take care of the Planet.
