As the memory of the pandemic period fades, Liceo Gramsci begins to open up to external experiences again in a concrete way. To fly high with your mind, it is not always necessary to go far. It is with this spirit that four students, Rita Fiori, Martina Ancilli, Jessica Niculescu (third Linguistic High School) and Sabrin Kerroum (fourth Linguistic High School), participated in the 21st edition of FermiMUN in Nuoro from 10 to 12 April 2024. The Fermi Model UN (Fermi MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly, which welcomes students from several schools in Sardinia and Europe, this year including delegations from France, Poland and Spain. The students are organized into delegations made up of two students each and are asked to simulate a session of the UN General Assembly which is divided into three days of conferences, using exclusively the English language and acting with maximum autonomy.

The Gramsci High School already participated in this event before 2016, but had to suspend its presence in the Covid years. This year, resuming the activity, the students represented the Czech Republic and Nigeria, immersing themselves in the perspectives of countries other than their own.

The Fermi MUN aims to educate participants to improve their ability to communicate effectively in public, understanding the opportunities and fragilities of globalization. It represents an exceptional opportunity to introduce the future citizens of tomorrow to the complexity of international cooperation, embracing the challenge of inclusion of diversity and mediation.

The four students returned exhausted but enthusiastic: Martina described the experience as “really fun and educational”, adding that it helped her practice the language and she learned a lot from the other students. Jessica remembers the “unique atmosphere” that was created with the other delegates. For Sabrin, it was an opportunity to “step out of your comfort zone and embrace the challenge”. Rita admits that she “discovered another part of herself, doing things that she didn’t think she was actually capable of doing.”

For all four, the desire to relive the experience is very strong, but above all the desire to say to the other kids: “You can do it too!”. Or rather, “Do it too!”
