generated value of 30 million euros per territory

Presented today by Lorenzo Giussani, Strategy & Growth Director of A2A, in the presence of Vittorio Torbianelli, General Secretary of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, the Territorial Sustainability Report of Friuli Venezia Giulia which reports the environmental, economic and social performance of the Group in the territory in 2023 and its activity plans expected for the next few years.

“In 2023, the overall value generated by the Group in the territory reached 30 million euros, up compared to the previous year. The significant investments for the development of infrastructure and for the reconversion of the Monfalcone power plant demonstrate the commitment of di A2A for the ecological transition of Friuli Venezia Giulia. – declared Lorenzo Giussani, Strategy & Growth Director of A2A – In the coming years, with the construction of the largest photovoltaic park in Northern Italy between Santa Maria la Longa and Pavia di Udine, we will provide further renewable energy to the Region, supporting its decarbonisation path . Positive results achieved also thanks to dialogue and collaboration with local stakeholders.”

In 2023, the Group – explains the note – distributed 30 million euros of economic value on the regional territory, up by approximately 20% compared to the previous year, also promoting social, cultural and environmental activities. A significant part of this contribution was allocated to the local economic fabric, with 10.7 million euros – 40% more than in 2022 – of orders to suppliers, of which 71% were micro or small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. In the same year, investments in infrastructure in Friuli Venezia Giulia increased by 94%, reaching 133 million euros, of which 116 million for the new combined cycle of Monfalcone. In 2023, the plant concluded the production maximization period, requested by the National Electricity System Manager to meet the country’s energy needs (with a 53% drop in thermoelectric production compared to 2022) and the authorizations were obtained for conversion into a high-efficiency combined cycle energy transition (CCGT) plant, with technology that involves the use of green hydrogen.

Furthermorein light of the recent MASE provision – Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety, the decommissioning operations of Groups 1 and 2 are starting. A2A has continued to focus on decarbonisation also through production from renewable sources. Work has started on the construction of the “Santo Stefano” photovoltaic park in the province of Udine, with an authorized capacity of 59.1 MWp.

With the recent acquisition of 70% of Parco Solare Friulano 2 (112.1 MWp of authorized capacity) the Group will create the main photovoltaic hub in Northern Italy. The plants, which will be completed between 2025 and 2027, will allow the production of over 210 GWh/year, making it possible to serve 75 thousand equivalent families and reduce gas consumption by 40 million m3.

Always with regards to the generation of green energy, the Somplago power plant produced 360 GWh, while the Ampezzo plant produced 107 GWh: an increase of approximately 71% compared to 2022. Thanks to the greater rainfall – in line with the historical seasonal average – the value of hydroelectric production returned to the average levels of the last 8 years and made it possible to avoid 197 thousand tonnes of CO2 (+77% compared to 2022). A2A also continued to develop sustainable mobility: through its charging network in the Region, 166 thousand kilometers were covered with zero emissions. Finally, the Group’s activities continued to include training courses for staff – almost 4,000 hours administered – and sustainability education for the local community. The “Futuro in Circolo” project involved 480 students in Friuli Venezia Giulia, while the visits to the hydroelectric nucleus of Somplago saw the participation of over 1,400 people including students and teachers from Friuli.
