Manganiello’s history with Roma and Genoa
Manganiello had already met Genoa 11 times in his career with a positive result for the rossoblu: 5 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats. The last one came before Grifone’s 2-1 victory in Verona on 7 April. The other victories came in 2020-21 with Spezia and Napoli and in 2017-2018 in the Italian Cup with Crotone and Cesena. The last defeat was the one on 10 April 2022 against Lazio at home 4-1. Pinerolo’s whistle was a good luck charm for Roma with the Giallorossi having been managed by him on 10 occasions with 9 victories and only one defeat, a decidedly heavy one: the 7-1 in the Italian Cup against Fiorentina in 2019. This season the paths of the black jacket and the Capitoline had crossed only once with Roma’s 1-0 victory against Sassuolo on March 17th.
The referee cautioned one player and sent off another
Assisted by the assistants Dei Giudici and Moro with Cosso IV man, Paterna at the Var and Pairetto at the Avar, the referee sent off Paredes in the 72nd minute and booked Lukaku in the 79th minute, both from Roma.
Roma-Genoa, the slow motion cases
These are the dubious episodes. In the 14th minute the referee let an action by Ekuban go offside, which created a big danger for Svilar: the assistant waved the flag at the end of the action, an action that would have allowed VAR to intervene in the event of a Genoa goal. In the 17th minute Genoa were denied a free kick from an interesting position and a card yellow for a handball by Llorente who blocks a shot from Retegui. Wrong decision by Manganiello.
In the 72nd minute Paredes was first booked and then directly sent off by Manganiello for a few too many words due to a tackle on the Giallorossi which was not judged to be a foul by the referee. In the 76th minute Roma asked for a penalty for a handball that wasn’t there: the Genoa player, from the ground, touched it with his hip. Finally in the 79th minute Lukaku was booked for excessive celebration: the striker scored and took off his shirt: he was warned and will miss the last championship match. Roma-Genoa could have been his last match in the Giallorossi.
