Earthquake today in Campi Flegrei, seismic swarm and 16 tremors

Still earthquake in the Campi Flegrei, today 18 May. From 6.06, as reported by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, earthquake swarm in the area, with the largest event of magnitude 2.8 recorded at 6.30 am. This was announced by the Department of Civil Protection whose Italy Situation Room, following the event, contacted the local structures of the National Civil Protection Service. The shock was felt by the population but from the first checks no damage has been reported so far.

“Since 06.06 local time on 18 May 2024 (UTC 04.06 on 05/18/2024) a seismic swarm has been underway in the Campi Flegrei area which, until 9.30 local time, it preliminarily recorded 16 earthquakes with Magnitude duration (Md) ≥ 0.0 (16 localized) and a maximum Magnitude (Md) of 2.8 (±0.3)”, specifies the Ingv, which continues: “It is specified, for the sake of clarity, that the maximum Magnitude duration of the swarm evaluated only in the preliminary phase at 3.7, was subsequently revised to Duration Magnitude (Md) 2.8. This different evaluation and the initial overestimation of the event was caused by an overlap of numerous small immediately subsequent events which distorted the preliminary reading”.

The mayor of Bacoli: “Situation under control”

“We have activated the municipal operations center for data reconnaissance, no damage to people or things has been found, there are reports, we have visited the homes, there is no structural damage: the situation is under control, but the monitoring”. Thus the mayor of Bacoli, Josi Della Ragione, to Adnkronos, regarding the earthquake registered this morning of magnitude 2.8.

“We are carrying out checks on the seismic vulnerability of buildings through the Civil Protection, we are preparing for the second test for the implementation of the exhibition plan on bradyseism, at the end of May. Furthermore, citizens will have brochures on evacuation plans, which will go to all the inhabitants of Bacoli”, concluded the mayor.
