The municipal administration of Livorno, with its Local Police, has announced the start of the installation of camera traps, with related service for the fight against environmental crimes, including the odious phenomenon of waste abandonment. The camera traps are being installed and several have already been positioned in central and peripheral areas of the city, in order to combat environmental crimes by applying the relevant sanctions. Specifically, these are mobile cameras that can also be used for judicial police activities and to increase urban security as well as for environmental protection.

The Municipality of Livorno also reminds us that, following some recent changes to the environmental code, many cases of waste abandonment now have criminal relevance even if committed by private individuals.

How camera traps work

The camera traps in use are advanced digital video surveillance devices that can take photos or record videos when they detect presumed illicit behavior or record continuously if intended for judicial police purposes or for integrated urban security to combat and repress crime and offences. The images and videos acquired are then analyzed and used by highly educated and trained operators of the Local Police of Livorno as well as proven interdisciplinary experience for the various subjects of interest, to identify offenders and sanction them.

Where the camera traps will be positioned

The camera traps will be positioned in specifically identified areas following statistical analyzes that detect violations of rules and regulations such as:

  • Urban, peripheral and rural areas of the municipal territory
  • Areas subject to waste abandonment phenomena
  • Areas subject to degradation with micro or crime phenomena

Why the camera trap service is important

“Calling them photo traps is perhaps an understatement – explained the commander of the Municipal Police, Annalisa Maritan -, it is an important technologically advanced tool for the Local Police to combat various types of crimes and to make our city a safer and more livable place for all. The mobile cameras and related service will be able to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring constant surveillance of the territory. Furthermore, the images and videos acquired represent a source of irrefutable evidence of the violations committed, facilitating the identification of violators and disbursement of sanctions”.

The Local Police invites citizens to respect national rules and municipal regulations to guarantee everyone’s safety and the liveability of our city.

The Mayor and the Environment Department express great satisfaction at the start of a complex but at the same time very useful project for the community.
