The tent city mounted in Pozzuoli by the Civil Protection in six areas of the city after the great earthquake of magnitude 4.4 of May 20th. The removal of the tents set up in Piazza a Mare, the port area and along Via Napoli, which served to offer temporary hospitality in the event of earthquakes to around 150 people, came as a surprise many residents. The decision was taken by the regional civil protection – it is explained – at the request of the Municipality of Pozzuoli. In any case the seismic swarms after May 20th are progressively ceased and (at the moment) no tremors of particular intensity are occurring. It must also be said that the tent cities were used very little by the citizens of Pozzuoli and almost exclusively in the first days immediately after the great earthquake which caused damage to numerous buildings in the city.

The mayor: «The reception center is always open»

On the decision to have the tent cities dismantled, the mayor of Pozzuoli, Gigi Manzoni, explains: «We decided to have them removed since they have not been used for more than a week and no situations are currently occurring that would require their use. Obviously, in this case we are ready to have them restored by the Civil Protection. The assistance center remains open at all times Palatrincone of Monterusciello, where those in need are guaranteed hospitality and served meals and more.” The decision of the Pozzuoli administration has caused perplexity. On social media groups some citizens comment: “But how do they know that the tremors are over and won’t happen again?” There are also those who call into question the tourist vocation of the Phlegraean city: “Maybe the tents scared the tourists” and those who hope: “Let’s hope it’s a good omen.”
