May 17, 2024

Due to the bad weather that is hitting the Veneto, in the early hours of Friday 17 May, the Muson dei Sassi flooded in the Rustega area of Camposampiero due to the failure of an embankment. Fire brigade teams with flood rescuers from the Padua, Vicenza, Belluno and Venice commands rushed to the scene, evacuating some houses that remained isolated. An amphibious vehicle is arriving from the Verona command and personnel and pumping equipment also from the Emilia Romagna commands.

The rescue operations are coordinated by the provincial commander Giuseppe Lomoro. The rescue system of the Padua fire brigade command has been strengthened with the doubling of shifts.

In Veneto critical situations, several floods

The Decentralized Functional Center of the Civil Protection of Veneto issued a nowcasting bulletin at 7 am with an update on the weather situation which indicates that in the last 6 hours there has been no precipitation but several critical situations due to last night’s intense rainfall in almost all provinces. This is what we read in a note. The intense and abundant rainfall, which occurred in a short period of time, led to extensive and significant flooding involving the inhabited centers of the municipalities of Asolo and Castelfranco Veneto. Further flooding is reported in the municipalities of Quarto d’Altino, Altivole, Casier, Fonte, Mogliano Veneto. We note the breakage of the bank of the Muson dei Sassi in the municipality of Camposampiero with the digression of the waters towards the territories located east of the Camposampiero area and confined to the south by the embankment of the Muson Vecchio. Landslides have been reported which are obstructing traffic in the foothills of Treviso and Belluno.

Widespread flooding remains mainly in the provinces of Vicenza and Padua due to the rainfall that occurred on May 15th and May 16th. The forecast indicates that in the morning there will be mainly no precipitation, from the central hours some new scattered precipitation is possible also with showers or local thunderstorms especially in central-eastern mountain/foothill areas. During the course of today there will be the transit of flood peaks in the plain/mouth sections of Piave, Livenza, Brenta and Bacchiglione. The Bisatto and Fratta-Gorzone will be able to maintain high levels due to the disposal of the water present in the secondary network. In the absence of precipitation, the mountainous portions of the waterways will continue to show decreases in levels.

Zaia: “48 devastating hours, government quickly declare a state of emergency”

The situation here is devastating. Now the weather forecast predicts some clear weather but we have just had a devastating 48 hours. Last night we had three bank breaches. In 2010 there were 32 embankment breaches, we had flooding in the Vicenza area, and partly in the Verona area. Two bridges collapsed in Malo. From last night until tonight there was everything. There was extraordinary rainfall in six hours.” Thus the president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, on ’24 Mattino’ on Radio24.

“I already declared a state of emergency yesterday and opened the crisis unit. There are hundreds of families with water at home, but they are not displaced people, we have hospitals involved, two retirement homes in difficulty. I hope the government quickly declares a state of emergency as we askedbecause there is a procedure that then allows us to be more agile even in compensation for damages to citizens” the words of the Venetian governor.
