Lamezia, “Favolescion”: students of the Campanella high school at a theater of emotions

Lamezia Terme – 25 students of the “Tommaso Campanella” high school, part of the “Giovani Vacantusi” company, were the leading actors at the Grandinetti Theater in a play entitled, Fairy tales. The text, adapted by the director Patrizia Anania, projected the actors and spectators into a fairy world of kings and queens, fairies, princesses and princes, but also “faces” known to the fairy tale universe, revisited in a modern key. The work, Fairy tales, is the final event of an interscholastic theater workshop project included in the artistic-educational activities of the PTOF of the Campanella Institute, curated by the Vacantusi theater company and followed, with the usual dedication, by Angela Gaetano who, several times over the years, has made his artistic vocation available to the high school.

The school director, Susanna Mustari, strongly wanted the participation of students in this important activity, fully implementing the indications contained in the Guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Merit regarding the role of theater in schools. “In fact, underlines the manager, it becomes part of the institute’s teaching offer, thus obtaining full citizenship in the educational background of our students”. The school coordinator of the project was Professor Nada Florimo, who highlighted the passion that accompanied the process which lasted an entire school year: “The children made this commitment their own with great seriousness, passion and dedication, attending the theater workshop with regularity and great spirit of sacrifice, dividing themselves responsibly between the laboratory and the countless afternoon activities offered by the Institute, without ever neglecting their school commitments, indeed demonstrating how the experience has strengthened the commitment of each of them in terms of responsibility”.

“It all started with auditions, which took place in November – adds the representative – again in the auditorium of the Campanella High School which involved a large number of students, fascinated by the world of theater and who immediately made their points emerge of strengths and their weaknesses; through theatrical practice, in fact, there was an emotional growth that significantly strengthened the character and the spirit of collaboration. All this was transformed, little by little, into awareness of oneself and of one’s hitherto unknown potential”. Theatrical activity, moreover, places the student at the center of the educational process as a person endowed with an emotional sphere and a creative potential that do not always manage to emerge, or, in any case, to be sufficiently valorised, in traditional curricula: it is therefore characterized as a privileged educational tool to respond to priority training needs. More than a performance, it turned out to be an extraordinary socio-cultural educational experience thanks to which the children had the opportunity to confront themselves and their limits, overcoming them brilliantly; furthermore, they came into contact with expressive techniques that favored individual awareness of themselves and their own creative and communicative possibilities. An event of important personal growth in which all those who committed themselves to ensuring that everything came to fruition in the best possible way strongly believed. But it doesn’t end here: on Saturday evening the magic will be repeated thanks to a performance that the young actors will offer to the city of Lamezia, since the show is part of the important program of the Vacantusi company which has enlivened the evenings of an entire theater season lametina, always in the setting of the Grandinetti Theatre.
