Tomatoes in schools, analyzes after illnesses: “No toxins”

Modena, 16 May 2024 – “No toxins”. This is what emerges from laboratory analysis carried out on cherry tomatoesbecome necessary after more than one hundred children and some teachers in four schools in the Modena area (as well as others cases in other schools of theEmilia Romagnaas to Forlì, Rimini And Faenza) they felt bad after eating them at school.

The cherry tomatoes had arrived on the tables of school canteens thanks to the ministerial project “Fruits and vegetables in schools”. Project then suspended.

They arrived today the first results of the analyses: no toxins of bacterial origin or chemical contaminants. This was confirmed by a press release from the Modena Local Health Authority.

“Following reports of episodes of food poisoning recorded in some primary schools in the Emilia-Romagna region participating in the ‘Fruit and vegetables in schools’ program – states the note from the health company -, the probable link with the consumption of cherry tomatoes. Immediate response was requested Suspension of the administration of the product and the competent services of the Public Health Departments of the local health authorities concerned, including Modena, carried out the appropriate controlsincluding sampling of cherry tomatoes”.

“The samples were delivered to the Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna and to the Arpae laboratory in Ferrara for the carrying out of a broad spectrum of research – continues the note from the ASL -. From the results of laboratory analyzes it emerged that in tomatoes no toxins of bacterial origin were presentfurthermore the values ​​referring to other possible values ​​were found to be normal chemical contaminants such as copper and other metals, sulphur, histamine and plant protection products. They are underway other analyses aimed at searching for substances naturally present in tomato plants and fruits that could be related to the episodes that occurred”.

“We would like to remind you that the children of the Modena schools who were the subject of the epidemiological investigation by the Local Health Authority – concludes the press release -, for a total of 4 institutesthere were 132, to which were added 7 teachers; all had mostly developed mild gastrointestinal symptoms.”
