flooded roads, two bridges collapsed and traffic at a standstill

The Decentralized Functional Center of Civil Protection of Veneto has issued a bulletin with an update on the weather situation valid from 3pm to 7pm today. In particular, it should be noted that the rainfall forecast for the next few hours may generate new increases in hydrometric levels, with further exceeding of the thresholds alertand cause further suffering to the secondary hydrographic network.

As regards the weather situation initially expected, they will still be there rainfall local/scattered, with a downpour or thunderstorm character. Over the course of the period, there will be a tendency for the phenomena to extend, which will gradually become more scattered/widespread, progressively affecting a good part of the territory starting from the western areas, even with locally strong phenomena. The expected trend from 6pm to 9pm today is generally widespread rainfall, often in the form of downpours or thunderstorms, with locally intense phenomena. Towards the end of the period, a thinning and attenuation of the phenomena is possible at least in the southern areas of the region.

Alert triggered

The red alert for hydraulic and hydrogeological risks in Veneto was triggered at 12pm today and will end tomorrow at 2pm. In the afternoon, in fact, a new unstable/disturbed phase is expected with widespread rainfall of a predominantly downpour nature and thunderstorms moving from south-west to north-east; probable locally intense phenomena between the plains and the Prealps (strong showers, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind) with even abundant quantities of precipitation during the most organized and insistent convective systems. General thinning and attenuation of the phenomena in the late evening. The red alert concerns, in particular, the Alto Brenta-Bacchiglione-Alpone, Po, Fissero-Tartaro-CanalBianco and Basso Adige, Basso Brenta -Bacchiglione, Basso Piave, Sile and lagoon drainage basins.

Bridge of the chickens out

The toll of bad weather damage in Veneto is heavy, particularly in Lower Padua, in Vicenza and in the Veronese area. Two bridges collapsed in Malo (Vicenza) and 2 embankments collapsed in Isola Vicentina, Castelnuovo and between Zimella and Cologna Veneta (Verona). The situation is considered critical, with particular attention to the eastern part of the region, therefore partially the Treviso area but above all the Venetian border with Don Friuli Venezia Giulia, for which the Livenza, Meduna and Tagliamento rivers are under observation.

Safety operations are underway by workers and men of the Civil Protection of the area where the so-called «Ponte della Galline» stood in Malo (Vicenza), a structure demolished by the flood of the Orolo torrent fueled by the rains of the last few hours.

Fear in Venice

Given the forecast of a new disturbed phase with widespread rainfall in the form of showers and thunderstorms, which could also affect our territory until today’s evening, the Decentralized Functional Center of the Veneto Region has issued a warning of hydrogeological and hydraulic criticality, with red alert for hydrogeological risk and orange for storm risk also for the city of Venice.
