The red weather alert has been issued for hydrogeological and hydraulic risk in Veneto. The notice is in effect from 12pm today to 2pm tomorrow 17 May. Hydraulic risk expected in the Upper Brenta-Bacchiglione-Alpone and Lower Brenta-Bacchiglione and Fratta Gorzone. Hydrogeological risk in the Po area, Fissero-Tartaro-Canalbianco and Basso Adige, Basso Piave, Sile and the basin draining into the lagoon and Basso Brenta-Bacchiglione and Fratta Gorzone.
New weather alert in Veneto, “exceptional phenomena”
“We are faced with exceptional rainfall phenomena, which have hit especially in the Vicenza, Verona and Padua areas. The opening of the rolling basins made it possible to avoid a disaster. We have activated all the basins in the Vicenza area – Montebello, Caldogno, Trissino, Orolo and Viale Diaz – and also one in the Verona area, that of Colombaretta. It was the first real test for some of these. In a few hours from late yesterday afternoon, the ARPAV and the Veneto Civil Protection recorded record rainfall: in the Piedmont area of Vicenza and Veronese there was an average of 180 mm of water, with peaks of 229 mm, in six hours. Yesterday evening we activated the Crisis Unit. This morning I signed the decree for the declaration of the State of Emergency due to adverse weather conditions. Such water bombs had never been seen in Veneto in May“: this is what the President of the Veneto Region declared who this morning together with the Regional Councilor for Civil Protection and all the technicians of the region met with the press to take stock of the situation on the effects of the violent disturbance that has been hitting since yesterday on Veneto.
The situation is evolving. Widespread flooding was reported in the provinces of: Vicenza (24 municipalities affected), Verona (11 municipalities affected from Monteforte d’Alpone to Legnano), Padua (26 municipalities affected from Padua to the entire lower Padua area) and Venice (16 municipalities affected including the capital). Three riverbank breaches occurred in the Vicenza area. The Orolo broke the embankment in the municipality of Isola Vicentina on the orographic right upstream of the basin. Flooding of the Aldegà river was reported in Zimella and another on the Timonchio in Villaverla and the flooding of the Ronego canal in the Municipality of Pojana Maggiore. There were also 3 embankment breaches in the Veronese area. In particular, the breach of the Guà river embankment between the municipalities of Zimella and Cologna Veneta. There were also numerous damaged bridges and damage to road infrastructure.

“I thank all the people who are working to ensure that the emergency is overcome – underlined the President of the Region – I remember that since yesterday evening over 100 Civil Protection teams have been involved, with more than 400 men in the area. To them must be added all the technicians, the Region’s staff and the volunteers who are working tirelessly in this new emergency. Special thanks also to the Fire Brigade, truly present in force and with the competence that distinguishes them”.
Bad weather: worsening in Vicenza, “secure assets and stay away from embankments”
The mayor of Vicenza Giacomo Possamai, who nevertheless activated the municipal civil protection operations center yesterday evening, appealed to his fellow citizens in view of the worsening of the conditions expected in the afternoon. “A further worsening of the weather is expected with new rains, probably less intense than those that surprised us tonight with intensity and quantity – stated the mayor of Vicenza – but I asked citizens to secure their possessions, to avoid basements and to avoid approaching rivers and streams in all those areas that could go under again. We will have to be on guard until at least 9pm this evening“.
