Wednesday 15 May was a day of severe bad weather which affected many areas of the North, in particular the LombardyL’Emilia Romagnabut also Veneto And Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Serious inconveniences were recorded in particular in Milan, where, due to floods and floods, many kindergartens and schools were evacuated. The river Lambro it was the first to overcome the banks, overflowing first in some Milanese neighborhoods and subsequently in Monza Park. Also the Seveso it flooded in the late afternoon.
The lamination tank of the Municipality of Milan held up as long as it could: then, once filled, the waters invaded the neighborhood of Niguarda. The situation was also very delicate in Emilia Romagna, where several superstorm cells hit various areas of the region during the afternoon.
One of the most intense was generated in the Forlivese area, and then moved towards the Ravenna area, causing severe disruption, especially to road traffic. Strong thunderstorms then moved towards the North East, between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Serious damage also occurred in Veneto in the province of Padua.
But how will the meteorological picture evolve in the next few hours?
Unfortunately, the situation is far from calm and there will still be opportunities for heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the consequent risk of further disruption.
The cyclonic circulation present in our country, connected to a vast and deep vortex currently located off the north-western coast of France, will continue to cause abundant rainfall, especially in the North.
In the early hours of the morning Scattered rain and some showers were recorded in some parts of the North-West, especially in Piedmont, upper Lombardy, on the coasts of Veneto and in many parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The weather is drier in the rest of the North, while large areas of clear weather are present in much of the Center and South. However, attention will have to be maximum again in the afternoon, when locally intense rains and thunderstorms will begin to move from the Northwest to the Northeast. Under observation will be theEmilia Romagnathe Lombardy eastern and the Veneto. In the evening, then watch out for Friuli Venezia Giuliawhere a strong wave of rain and thunderstorms is expected, with very heavy accumulations of rain which will increase the risk of inconvenience and hydrogeological problems.
Based on available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection, in agreement with the regions involved, who are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned, issued a warning of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting the different areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).
The warning predicts widespread and locally persistent precipitation, even in the form of a downpour or thunderstorm, over the autonomous province of Trento, extending to Friuli Venezia Giulia. Scattered to widespread precipitation, including showers or thunderstorms, will persist across Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto. The rains will be more abundant in the Alpine and pre-Alpine sectors and the phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind.
On the basis of the foreseen and ongoing phenomena, it was evaluated for the day of Thursday 16 May, ORANGE ALERT over part of Lombardy and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Furthermore, it is expected YELLOW ALERT on Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia and on parts of Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Marche.
