MESSINA – Two men of Campania origin were arrested by the Carabinieri in Messina after, posing as soldiers of the force, they defrauded an elderly woman by having gold and costume jewelery worth over 500 euros delivered to her. They are accused of aggravated fraud in competition. According to what was reconstructed by the police, in recent days the two suspects contacted the victim by telephone and, with the excuse of a fake road accident caused by his nephew, asked her for money which would be used to pay the lawyer for the defense of his relative.
When shortly afterwards they showed up at the woman’s house, the latter, frightened by what they had told her on the phone, not having immediate access to cash, gathered together all the valuable objects she owned and handed them over to them. The two from Campania, aboard a car which appeared to be rental, were immediately checked by a patrol engaged in a prevention service in the area and were found in possession of the stolen goods. The investigating judge of the Court of Messina validated the arrest and ordered the measure of the obligation to reside in the municipalities of residence.
