CATANZARO – The restoration of the polychrome capitals of the archaeological site of Gianmartino in Tiriolo and that of the San Giacomo bastion of the castle of Charles V in Crotone. The Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Catanzaro and Crotone presents the innovative techniques and methodologies used in the two construction sites at the 29th edition of the International Restoration Exhibition of Ferrara, one of the most important events dedicated to the protection and enhancement of cultural and landscape assets scheduled at the Ferrara Expo fairgrounds. The restorations will be the subject of two workshops on 15 and 16 May, curated by the superintendent Stefania Argenti.

One of the six restored polychrome capitals will be put on display and presented as an absolute preview to the experts, allowing workshop participants to appreciate de visu the work carried out on an artifact of exceptional beauty. The capitals are part of a sumptuous building from the Brettian age found in an excellent state of conservation during the excavations carried out between 2014 and 2016 in the archaeological site of Tiriolo, in the province of Catanzaro. The stone fragments, studied, treated and recomposed in their original unity, will be returned to the collective cultural heritage with supports that will allow them to be easily moved and displayed in a museum.

“The proposed laboratory activities – explains a note issued by the Catanzaro operational headquarters of the Superintendence – represent a unique cultural experience, as they will give all participants (students, sector professionals or simply curious people) the opportunity to study and observe live the work of restorers, architects and archaeologists, interacting with them and learning the most innovative restoration techniques and the work in progress solutions adopted by the works management”.
