THE EAGLE. The renovation work on the former Capitignano railway station, which has been unused for almost ninety years, will begin soon. The executive project, drawn up by the Municipality of Capitignano, was acquired by the Special Office of Fossa and will be financed with 800,000 euros. The Municipality of Capitignano became the owner of the former station after an agreement with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and the State Property Agency.
HISTORY
Opened in 1922 upon completion of the L’Aquila-Capitignano railway line, the former Capitignano railway station, about 30 kilometers from L’Aquila, remained in service until it was decommissioned in 1935. Like the other stations, we read on Ministry website «also that of Capitignano is inspired by mountain chalets with sloping roofs, and was at the time equipped with every comfort, both for goods and for travellers. It is made up of a main building on two levels, previously used as a railway station, a second building serving the station and a building originally intended as a locomotive shelter. The central protruding area has a greater height than the side wings, thus giving composure and balance to the entire building. The interior has maintained its original composition, with a main staircase that allows access to the upper floors, once the residence of the station and railway service workers. The development agreement signed between the State Property Agency, the Regional Secretariat for Abruzzo and the Municipality of Capitignano provides for the conversion of the passenger buildings, offices and locomotive shed into tourist accommodation facilities strongly identifying the places and serving the L’Aquila cycle route -Capitignano”.
PROJECT MORE
However, the renovation of the former railway station is only the first step of a larger project that the Municipality of Capitignano has been working on for some time. «Our goal», says the mayor Franco Pucci, «is to make the area a point of reference for tourism. Some of the post-earthquake maps, once abandoned from their original function, will constitute a tourist village. We will also create a sort of amphitheater for shows and recreational moments, we will enhance a nearby archaeological area, we will create a museum on the most recent earthquakes, there will be a camper area and green areas. In short, a place to live all year round. The aim is to create job opportunities for those who want to bet on our territory – which has so much potential, starting from the beauty of the landscape – which is still unexpressed”.
