Stefano Massini attacked at the Book Fair

Insulted and pulled during the presentation of his version of ‘Mein Kampf’. Protagonist of the incident that occurred this afternoon the writer Stefano Massini, guest at the Turin Book Fair the day after his participation in Fabio Fazio’s program. “The man who attacked me, first verbally then physically, heard me last night on ‘Che tempo che fa’ – he tells Adnkronos – While I was under the stage, waiting to get on the small platform, this guy, He must have been around seventy years old, he came to me and said ‘It’s easy like that, to go and badmouth Hitler without being cross-examined’. He sat in the front row, started muttering, disagreeing with everything I said, offending me with phrases ‘you’re a buffoon’, ‘you’re a communist’, and then ‘what should I hear’. At the end of the meeting I thought it was over, and at that point I would have kept it to myself. And instead, when I got out, he grabbed me by the sleeve of my jacket as if to hold me back, he yelled at me that ‘I sucked’that Fazio and I must stop rewriting history, that things are different from how I wrote them.”

“I told him that we were in Turin, in the city of Piero Gobetti, and at that point some of the guys who were there listening to me gave a kind of applause, as if to tell the guy ‘go away’. But he came under me, and, despite the intervention of 6, 7 people from the order service, he grabbed me by the collar of my jacket. The physical aggression took the form of a couple of pushes and tugs”, says Massini. As for the possibility of filing a complaint, “for now I don’t think I’ll do anything at all, even if he told me all kinds of things, and then at the Book Fair… At the moment I don’t think I should report it, he’s a person of a certain age… Of course, many have urged me not to downplay it, I’ll think about it. It certainly wasn’t a pleasant thing. I’d like to say that I found him not very lucid, but that’s not the case: someone who uses the expression ‘lack of cross-examination’ seems decidedly lucid.”
