The Molfetta footballer is unable to smile as he closes the 2023-24 sports season as he couldn’t have done worse.
Three relegations, a bitter defeat in the playoffs are the results of a thrilling season, a horribilis year that closes its doors with very few smiles and many ideas that absolutely need to be reorganized.
Virtus Molfetta is the latest team that fails to reverse a very unedifying trend for Molfetta football. Nine years in the First Category, with some brilliant seasons close to the top of the class. This year little or nothing worked, a lot of nervousness and disqualifications of leading men, a pitch, the Petrone, unusable after the November storm and many uncertainties have undermined that family spirit on which Virtus Molfetta was founded. There was no real culprit, but the pitch had too many mistakes, the latest in the playout match at home, with two results out of three. And the die is soon cast. A cycle ends for the red and whites, a wonderful experience that saw the Virtussini in the First Category: the photo of the relegation is Germinario and De Pinto, embracing at the end of the match, two men who have lived many seasons in the red and white jersey, fighting on pitches dusty and others in grass, emblem of a cycle that is closing and of values on which the old Virtus was based and which, perhaps, the younger and more talented have not understood well.
Nor can we condemn Borgorosso’s season, certainly one of the teams with the least budget in the Eccellenza championship, but with a lot of heart. As long as it beat pride and belonging, the Borgorosso toy worked: last year they finished fifth, this year, in the championship with huge relegations, Mr. Carlucci’s team finished third to last, not even qualifying. for that glimmer of hope that the playouts could offer. The joy of beating Molfetta Calcio was ephemeral: unfortunately, Borgorosso ran into two difficult months, the last, the decisive ones that condemned them to Promotion. Perhaps, a championship more in keeping with the spirit of friendship and aggregation of the Molfetta association which will certainly want to play a leading role in the second most important regional championship.
Little, very little to say about Molfetta Sportiva 1917. Those who know Lanza’s last seasons had predicted another, yet another, season without joy and with many sorrows. But the premises seemed very different and there were those who believed in them. Or was he simply deluded, because, there’s no denying it, in Molfetta, naming that “Molfetta Sportiva 1917” always has a certain effect. Nothing to be done, the camp which is the supreme judge has decreed that after San Severo, for an entire season with the juniors due to well-known economic problems, there was the historic Molfetta club. Which ended the season as badly as it could have done: Unione Calcio Bisceglie – Molfetta Sportiva 13-0, Molfetta Sportiva – Mola 0-17, San Marco – Molfetta Sportiva 12-0 are the last three defeats that ended the season.
Fulgor Molfetta is out of category, the essence of friends’ football and nothing more. The Molfetta team leads the table with three points, but the statistics say nine goals scored, 113 conceded.
Molfetta Calcio gave us some joy as, having reached the most beautiful point, it then melted like snow in the sun. In August the limbo for the repechage to Serie D was detrimental, in the end it was Eccellenza and the red and whites played an initial segment of the championship as undefeated and as leaders. Then some creaks, the change of coach and Bisceglie going like a train, while the red and whites raised the handbrake, very frequently. The Puglia Cup final was the icing on the cake of the new year, the crowded Poli in every row was the dream of the owner Bufi, but the defeat in the Cup and the subsequent falls in the championship also accentuated a fracture between the team group and the fans. Bisceglie almost escapes to the playoff final, but in the derby, the red and whites subvert the prediction, win, make an armistice with the fans and take the star-studded black and blues to the playoffs. At Ventura, in a playoff derby in which the fans of both teams return, a lackluster draw ends the season and Bisceglie qualifies, then defeated by Ugento. The corporate objectives may have been achieved, but the bitter taste remains. Even though, all things considered, she was certainly the best of the four footballers from Molfetta.
